Social Care News: Young offenders - Age of adult transition underreview

A Government review of the criminal justice system will examine whether the age at which young offenders are treated as adults should change.

News of the review, which the National Offender Management Service willcarry out, coincided with the publication of an independent reportcalling for more support to help children moving into the adult prisonsystem.

The report, produced by the Barrow Cadbury Trust's commission on youngadults in the criminal justice system, recommends changes to the prisonsystem to ensure support for young offenders continues when they becomeadults, as is the case with support for care leavers.

The commission calls for the creation of transition to adulthood teamsto support care leavers in prison up to the age of 21 and other over-18sin the criminal justice system who need help.
