NCB Now: National Autistic Society launches scheme to empower local families

1 min read
The National Autistic Society (NAS) is launching a network to empower people with autism and their families to campaign and raise awareness of autism in their area.

The Autism Action Network aims to help local campaigners build upon the fantastic work they are doing to represent the interests of people with autism and their families. The network has recruited more than 100 adults with autism, parents and carers across the country to be ambassadors, and they will receive training to take action in partnership with NAS. Activities include:

  • Campaigning locally and nationally
  • Talking about their experiences in the media
  • Informing NAS positions on key issues

Currently, 63 per cent of adults with autism do not have adequate support, while only 15 per cent are in full-time paid work. More than 70 per cent of children with autism also have a mental health problem, while half of children have to wait more than a year to get the right support at school.

Applications for ambassadors have now closed but if you're interested in being part of the wider network please visit www.autism.org.uk/aan
