Its previous helpline dealt with an 18 per cent increase in calls in January compared with the same period last year. This figure could well rise with the inclusion of a language line for non-English-speaking callers, who are able to get information through a three-way phone conference service giving access to interpreters in more than 120 languages.
The cost of calling the helpline, which also offers minicom access for the deaf and hard of hearing, has been reduced to local call rates. The society has also launched an email helpline.
