Legal campaign to improve autism rights.

The National Autistic Society (NAS) has ramped up its legal campaigning with the launch of a new Autism Legal Network, which is open to legal professionals, charities and academics. Mark Lever, chief executive, said: "In the current economic climate, political campaigning is only going to become more difficult, but championing the rights of people with autism through the courts could dramatically increase our impact and help to create real and lasting change."

The NAS helped to set a legal precedent in the Supreme Court last month in the A Vs Essex case. As a result, councils that leave a child with autism without any education risk being held by the courts to have breached that child's human rights. The charity is now appealing for cases aimed at tackling the devastating lack of help for the over 70 per cent of children with autism who also have a mental health problem.
