NCB Now: Member news -- Save the Children

Save the Children and the Daycare Trust have launched a consultation of UK parents looking at how paying for childcare affects their lives. Britain is among the most expensive countries in the world for childcare and costs have increased year on year for the past 10 years.

Until April 2011, parents in low paid jobs could get up to 80 per cent of childcare costs covered through working tax credits but measures taken by the Chancellor have cut this to 70 per cent. It is likely that this level of support will remain the same with the new universal credit, so Save the Children is calling for the government to increase overall funding for childcare so that parents aren't priced out of the jobs market.

Following the consultation, Save the Children will be running an online campaign in July asking people to write to their MPs urging them to ask the Chancellor to reverse the cut in childcare support.

The findings from the consultation and the online action will be delivered to the government in the autumn. For more information, contact sara.drysdale@savethechildren.org.uk.
