Parents quit work due to childcare costs

1 min read Early Years
A quarter of parents with an annual household income of less than 12,000 have given up work because of high childcare costs, a survey by Save the Children and the Daycare Trust has found.

Responses from more than 4,000 parents found that a third of those living in severe poverty have turned down a job because of their inability to afford childcare. Nearly half of those in poverty have had to cut back on food to pay for childcare and 80 per cent of employed low income parents said they were no better off working once childcare is paid for.

Reductions to the childcare element of working tax credit have also had an impact on the lowest income families with four out of ten of those affected considering giving up work because they will no longer earn enough to cover their childcare bill.
