Vacancies for school leavers and graduates are becoming scarce, making life after exams a bleak prospect for young people. But youth workers can take steps to boost their morale.

The job prospects of school leavers and graduates are worsening at an alarming rate, according to latest research.

A study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and professional services firm KPMG found that just under half of all UK companies are not planning to recruit any school leavers or graduates.

Only 17 per cent of the 500 firms surveyed plan to recruit 16-year-old school leavers in the next three months. The figures are marginally better for 18-year-olds leaving further education but still depressingly low at 33 per cent.

The chances of gaining a job improve further for graduates, but less than half of firms will be recruiting university leavers this summer and a third of employers say they have already made cuts to their graduate intake.
