With the summer holidays approaching, now is the time for youth workers to plan more outdoor activities. This is not just important to engage young people but also to help combat a worrying rise in obesity and type two diabetes.
Figures released in Parliament in April show that hospital admissions of 10- to 18-year-olds due to type two diabetes, which is linked to obesity, have risen by 28 per cent.
Late last month, another set of figures from the London Health Observatory (LHO) showed further worrying results, particularly relating to young people in poor, urban areas. The LHO report, Weighty Matters, found that at least one in five 10- and 11-year-olds in the capital is at risk of obesity. The risk was found to be greater among boys, those in poorer areas and among black and ethnic minority communities.
