Youth volunteering can break down stereotypes and give young people the chance to have a say in how their local community is helped, according to a report by Youth Action Network.
The report, which was carried out in partnership with De Montfort University's Centre for Social Action, found that around eight out of 10 young volunteers believe that voluntary work gives them a higher sense of influence and of being trusted.
Around half of those surveyed said volunteering had altered their opinion about different types of people. A similar amount said this gave them a better understanding of different cultures and social groups and even encouraged them to socialise with different types of people.
