Youth Work: Scouts overhaul badges selection

The Scout Association has overhauled its activity programme, offering badges in 40 new activities including snowboarding and parascending.

The aim is to update and broaden the range of activities on offer and follows consultation with Scouts as well as education specialists and activity and sports governing bodies.

The new badges bring the number available to 200, with other new activities including street sports such as skateboarding and in-line skating and healthy eating. The new badges were unveiled at the weekend, to coincide with the Scout Association Winter Camp, which involved 2,500 scouts camping at Gillwell Park in Essex.

In addition to the new activities, a number of existing badges have been modernised and broadened to different ages.

For example, the emergency aid badge will now be available to the full range of groups, the Beavers, Cubs Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts.
