Scouts introduce sexual education programme

The Scout Association has launched its first sexual education programme aimed at helping young people learn about relationships and sexual health.

Scout leaders in the association’s Explorer section for 14- to 18-year-olds, will now have educational material to help engage young people in informal discussions after increasing demand from adults and young people within the movement.

In 2008, the association introduced formal guidance for scout leaders to help them respond appropriately if asked about sex and relationship related matters.

Matt Mills, a scout leader from Essex, who was involved in the development and testing of the latest material, said: "This new guidance means that the young people who we work with will be supported in making informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. For some time now leaders like me have been asking for support with these issues and this material helps me support young people with this issue.
