
Annual membership figures for the association reveal that 4,330 girls joined the movement compared to 3,796 boys in the 12 months up to 31 January 2011. Female youth membership has seen a 6.9 per cent rise in the past year and an 88 per cent rise since 2005.
Abi Collier, a 15-year-old Explorer Scout from Birmingham, said: "We’ve got a great mix of girls and boys in my local unit. The opportunities offered to you every week are amazing – one week you could be abseiling down a cliff face, the next doing conservation work."
More than twice as many girls as boys signed up in Cambridgeshire, while a similar trend was seen in Northamptonshire, Devon and Greater London.
