Record numbers of teenagers are becoming Scout leaders, The Scout Association has revealed.

Results of the annual national Scout census show that the number of explorer Scouts involved in the movement’s young leaders’ scheme has topped 10,000 for the first time, with the ranks now standing at 10,394.

Wider figures for the movement show total UK membership is the highest it has been this century, at 525,327 members.

Young leaders are explorer Scouts aged 14 to 18 who work as leaders in sections of the movement aimed at younger people; Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts.

Numbers have increased dramatically since the young leaders’ scheme was launched in 2002.

There has been a 70 per cent increase in the past five years (there were 6,127 in 2007).
