More girls join Scouts

Almost as many girls as boys joined the UK Scout Movement last year, after the number of new girl Scouts rose by 11 per cent.

More than 5,500 girls joined the Scouts last year, making up 14 per cent of young members of the movement overall, according to the organisation's annual figures released today.

Membership has risen overall to nearly half a million and the number of adult leaders has also gone up by 3.6 per cent. But the organisation said it still needed to recruit another 6,600 adult volunteers to clear its waiting list of more than 30,000 children and young people wanting to join the movement.

Chief Scout Peter Duncan said: "Volunteers are not giving something up, they are gaining the opportunity to be part of a young sociable society, developing and sharing skills such as leadership  and taking responsibility for all aspects of life"
