Youth work: A skills structure for youth work

A new skills framework will aim to clarify the role of the youth worker. Janaki Mahadevan finds out the problems this poses.

Later this month, the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) will launch a consultation on a Skills Development Framework for the youth workforce.

It is part of a wider move to improve the skills and status of youth workers as set out in the 2020 Children and Young People's Workforce Strategy (see below).

The consultation will ask what skills workers need to successfully engage young people, establish a clear career pathway and ask how to raise the status of a profession that feels undervalued.

But does the move represent a step towards a licence to practise, where youth workers will have to prove they have a certain set of skills in order to do their job?
