A programme of reform for the youth workforce is forging ahead. But are the changes moving integrated support services in the right direction? Ross Watson reports.

Youth Professional Status

The government's scheme to raise the status of professionals working with young people has not had a warm reception. It is currently being piloted by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) in nine areas across England.

The CWDC says the new status is not so much a qualification or job title, but rather a step on the career ladder, a symbol of an individual's management potential.

To gain it, professionals must be graduates and must complete an assessment based on a number of standards drafted by the CWDC. These include showing a commitment to integrated working, sharing best practice and demonstrating management skills.
