In the past, the Association of Principal Youth and Community Officers (APYCO) has employed ex-principal officers on a consultancy basis, but this is the first time the group has employed a permanent chief executive.
John Goffee, APYCO chair and head of Lancashire's youth service, said: "I've found it quite difficult to fit things in, so we thought that a chief executive post would be helpful. At the moment the amount of work that is required is quite substantial."
The chief executive will support members and work with partner agencies.
John Appleton, APYCO chair designate and youth service manager in Cornwall, said: "Key areas for the chief executive will be developing services to the members of APYCO, providing them with information and support. The chief executive must also look at the development of APYCO, and how that is going to fit in with wider developments around both Youth Matters and Every Child Matters."
