At Young People Now's Children's Trusts for Young People conference last week, Leon Mexter, chief executive of the North East Regional Youth Work Unit, called for a rethink of the role and more resources for management training.
"We've been underestimating the demands placed on principal youth officers to have two competing roles: operational and strategic," he said.
"Over the past five years, there has been a gradual move towards more integrated service delivery. That brings the need to place your service prominently within the local authority, get on the board of the children's trust and around the table when they're discussing the children and young people's plan."
