Youth Services: Merton criticised in Ofsted evaluation

Inspectors found that one-third of the work they observed in the south London borough provided inadequate opportunities for the personal and social development of young people.

Too much emphasis is placed on recreational activity and not enough on education and training, concluded the inspectors. But inspectors did add that Merton's youth workers are motivated and that targeted work was producing good results.

Labour councillor Stephen Alambritis, Merton's cabinet member for social inclusion, said: "I am already working with staff to put in place the necessary changes to this service for Merton's young people."
