Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, is chair of his village youth group and believes that youth services can play a part in improving behaviour.
"We have had issues in Cumbria regarding the future of the youth service," he said. "We are reshuffling the pack a bit, but over the past 20 years there have been cuts, and we are reaping the rewards of these very short-sighted decisions through youth disorder and disaffection."
Cumbria County Council disbanded its youth service in 2001, and transferred its funding to Connexions, but is now making moves to rebuild a team (YPN, 1-7 June, p3).
