The guidelines, agreed by the Federation for Detached Youth Work's executive committee, are the result of 12 months of research led by its former vice-chair, Graeme Tiffany. They will be launched at the organisation's national conference next month.
The guidelines cover areas of work including management and planning, training, young people's participation and how detached youth workers should promote themselves to other agencies.
Tiffany said his research had revealed that the concept of standards does not fit well with the concept of detached youth work. "The kind of bureaucracy associated with the language of outcomes, targets and standards hampers achievement," he said.
