Youth services: Cambridgeshire pushes for opportunity card alternative

1 min read

The authority, which was one of the pilot areas for the opportunity card, is hoping to reach out to 2,000 disadvantaged young people through the scheme. Each card would be credited with up to 40 a month to be spent on sporting and cultural activities.

The Government scrapped attempts to introduce a national activity card earlier this year, after technical limitations hindered the project (YPN, 28 February-6 March, p2). The nine pilot areas have now submitted proposals for alternative schemes to reach disengaged young people, using the 20m left over from the card pilots.

Cambridgeshire's plan is similar to the original concept of the opportunity card. Looked-after young people and children receiving free school meals would be eligible.
