Youth engagement: Opportunity card substitutes sought

The card programme was abandoned in February due to technology problems, but the pilot areas have now been asked to propose schemes that could achieve a similar aim. Whereas the opportunity card was aimed at all young people, with a focus on the most disadvantaged, the new proposals will look solely at disadvantaged teenagers.

The opportunity card would have placed funding directly in the hands of young people; under the revised scheme young people must control funding, but not necessarily hold it.

The nine areas have been asked to submit plans by 29 June. A Department for Education and Skills spokeswoman said there is 20m earmarked for the scheme over the next two years.
