Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Worcestershire

3 mins read
A team of about 40 young people - dubbed "Floss" - have travelled to assess projects or sat on the grant panel, writes Tim Burke.

Worcestershire's youth opportunity fund goes by the name of Floss. Why?It's deliberately vague so you have to ask what it means and once you'vedone that you're already engaged in a conversation to find out more. Thename Floss came up during a meeting with young people as an intriguingname, along with the subtitle "money for young people". It was onlylater that "Funding Lots Of Super Stuff" was suggested as anexplanation. Floss has about 285,000 a year to distribute to fundactivities for young people. A slightly different panel known as "DaBid" distributes the council's 246,000 youth capital fundallocation.

Who is on the panel? "It's really been about mass marketing," saysRachel Adams, one of two workers providing part-time support to Floss."We've never had a shopping list of who to get on board but the youngpeople themselves have recognised who might not know about this and havegone and contacted them."
