Youth justice: Welsh system neglects training

Almost a third of young people in the youth justice system in Wales do not get any education or training, according to education inspectors.

Estyn, the education and training inspectorate for Wales, last weekpublished a report that said local authorities were "not fulfillingtheir statutory duty" to educate young offenders.

The report calls for school children under youth offending teamsupervision to be provided with full-time education and access tocareers advisers.

Estyn's chief inspector Susan Lewis said: "Too many barriers preventyoung people in the youth justice system from getting education andtraining.

This has a negative impact on their life chances and hampers efforts toreduce crime."
