We usually find that young people take up the practice when they are introduced to it by their friends, rather than via education.
Despite this, McVey believes the number of deaths from volatile substance misuse has declined. There were five deaths in the 2002 figures and we are waiting for new figures for 2003-04, which are due out on 20 July along with a new framework from the Government on tackling substance misuse. But we expect to find that the number of deaths has gone down.
