Substance misuse: Charity fears rise in number of deaths

Data compiled by St George's, University of London shows that 11 young people aged 11 to 19 died from abusing volatile substances in 2003, a sharp drop from 27 deaths in 2002.

Jon McVey, deputy director of Re-Solv, said: "We're very pleased, especially as we were doing lots of work around the country at the time. But we don't yet know if this is a real fall or a random variation. The press cuttings we've been getting since 2003 suggest that this fall might not be maintained."

The Trends in Death Associated with Abuse of Volatile Substances 1971-2003 report also found that an increasing proportion of under-18s who abuse volatile substances were female.
