Substance misuse: Volatile substance abuse deaths rise

This figure was up from nine in the previous year. Eight of the 13 deaths in 2004 were associated with butane cigarette lighter refills, the sale of which is banned to under-18s.

Eight young people aged 10 to 15 died from volatile substance misuse compared with three deaths from drug misuse, according to figures released by St George's, University of London, on behalf of the Government.

Warren Hawksley, director of substance misuse prevention charity Re-Solv, said: "The fact that so many under-18s are dying from abusing butane gas suggests shops are still selling to young people."
