Youth Justice: Rise in ASBO usage leads to anxieties

1 min read

Home Office figures published last week show that in the first nine months of 2005, 1,058 ASBOs were given to young people aged 10 to 17. This is an increase of 305 on the same period in the previous year.

The figures also showed wide regional variations in the use of ASBOs. In the first three-quarters of 2005, Greater Manchester issued 152, while Merseyside and Nottinghamshire issued 32 and 40 respectively.

Matt Foot, co-ordinator of ASBO Concern, said there is growing evidence that ASBOs are being used inappropriately, for example with young people with mental disorders.

The Youth Justice Board is conducting research into the role of youth offending teams and other agencies in applying for ASBOs. The research is expected to be published in the autumn.
