Youth Justice News: Knives - Met Police begins knife crime review

Faced with rising numbers of murders committed by young people using knives, the unit has been asked to take a fresh look at the situation, and see if the police can do more to prevent crimes occurring.

In 2004 the unit investigated 19 murders committed by 10- to 17-year-olds. In 2005 the figure rose to 21 while 17 killings took place in London in the first 10 months of this year.

The directorate held a meeting last week with academics, anti-knife projects and other interested parties to assess how the work could be taken forward.

Inspector Mark Scoular said: "We pulled together a group of people to help us by doing a problem-solving day."
