Youth Justice News: Inspections - Inspectors to investigate youthcourts' relationship with young

A Home Office good practice guide, The Youth Court 2001: The Changing Culture of the Youth Court, made a number of recommendations based on a successful demonstration project that ran from October 1998 to March 2000 in Rotherham and Leicester.

Karen Cracknell, lead inspector for the new review at HM Inspectorate of Court Administration, said: "We are going to be looking at it in relation to the youth courts guidelines that were issued in 2001 to see if they have been implemented."

The Home Office guide covered four main areas: how young people and their families are engaged with the court; the physical layout of the court, and how this could be improved; how youth court proceedings could become more open; and how feedback to sentencers could be improved.
