Mission: To give young offenders the chance to gain qualifications

Funding: Toyota spent about 250,000 setting up the scheme

The importance of education for young offenders is widely recognised, but few get access to facilities such as those Toyota has set up at Aylesbury Young Offender Institution.

The vehicle maker has set up a workshop inside the institution, where young people work towards light vehicle technician advanced Apprenticeships, and other nationally recognised qualifications.

The work is part of Toyota's overall training strategy for young people, the Toyota Technical Education Programme, which recently won a 50,000 national award from Edge, a foundation established to promote vocational and practical learning to young people aged 14 to 25.
