Mission: To raise the self-esteem of young offenders and reduce the likelihood of reoffending

Funding: The project costs roughly 100,000 a year, and is funded by Thorn Cross Young Offender Institution, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Impact Project (Innovation Means Prisons and Communities Together)

Launched in 2005, the Thorn Cross Fire Cadet Programme is run jointly by staff at Thorn Cross open young offender institution in Warrington, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Impact project.

It is targeted at 15- to 18-year-olds, including some who may be in custody for arson or motoring offences. As part of the 12-week programme, the cadets work towards a BTEC National Certificate in Fire Fighting Skills, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Bronze award and the Community Sports Leaders' Award.
