
Project Respect
Purpose To prevent young people getting involved in antisocial behaviour and crime
Funding £1.3m over three years from the government’s Invest to Save fund
Background Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service already had experience of working with challenging young people but felt it could do more to work with those most at risk of social exclusion.
Together with young people’s charity the Youth Federation and two local authorities, it successfully bid for government funding and in 2006 launched Respect (Reducing Exclusion Starting Positive Engagement with Children Together).
At the time, questions were raised about why one of the largest amounts of external funding awarded to Cheshire had gone to the fire brigade and not mainstream education and youth services, admits Evan Morris, head of community safety for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. However, the programme has gone on to work very closely with local councils.
