Youth justice: Breach rate rises for young people on ASBOs

1 min read

Home Office figures released last week show that the breach rate for under-18s rose from 47 per cent at the end of 2003, to 57 per cent at the end of 2005.

The figures, which add data for the final quarter of 2005 to previous statistics, also show a continued increase in the use of ASBOs.

In 2004 1,318 were given to juveniles, rising to 1,555 in 2005. The percentage of all ASBOs given to young people has remained constant at about 40 per cent.

However, the quarterly figures show a drop in the number issued during 2005. Across England and Wales, the figure for juveniles dropped from 446 in the first quarter, to 315 in the last.
