The YJB has set up a Restorative Justice Strategy Group, after it received positive responses to a consultation it launched in November (YPN, 8-14 November 2006, p7).
Rosemary Hartill, a board member of the YJB, will chair the group, which will include representatives from the police, youth offending teams and the secure estate, as well as YJB staff. Hartill said: "We will begin by looking at youth offender panels and the secure estate, and then move on to develop a longer-term strategy."
Kathy Evans, policy director at The Children's Society, welcomed the announcement, but warned: "It is important not to think that restorative justice is a silver bullet for everything. You have to take time to make sure that young people and the victim go into it voluntarily and agree to the process."
