Youth Justice Board prevention Conference: Review to look ateducation of under-16s in youth justice

Ministers are understood to be concerned that young people aged 16 and under miss out on education once they become involved with the youth justice system, which can increase the chances of them reoffending.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is expected to launch the review of education for school-age young offenders on Friday. It is not likely to include specific proposals, but will instead be designed to gather information on problems that need to be addressed.

Speaking at the Youth Justice Board's Preventing Offending and Anti-Social Behaviour conference last Thursday, YJB interim chair Graham Robb said poor education is a "key risk factor" of involvement in crime.
