YOUTH CRIME: Initiative to tackle media stereotypes

1 min read

Lauching on 28 July, the Shape initiative has been set up by crime-prevention body Nacro, and young people's charities Barnardo's, The Children's Society, the National Children's Bureau, NCH and the NSPCC. It will attempt to raise the level of public debate by providing information, comment and analysis of the issues.

The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation has provided 152,000 through its Rethinking Crime and Punishment initiative to fund the programme for 18 months. The initial grant will end next April and further sources of revenue are being sought.

Shape's overall aim is to change the way the public and media think and talk about youth crime. It will champion "proven and innovative programmes that are effective at reducing youth crime".
