Young Offenders: Prisons failing to support the young

At the launch of the RESET resettlement programme for young offenders last week (YPN, 21-27 September, p4), Ramsbotham said he was in favour of the scheme, but was worried about the institutions. "Some props we assume will help young people simply aren't there," he said.

Ramsbotham welcomed statements by Home Secretary Charles Clarke in support of community prisons.

Speaking at the Prison Reform Trust's annual lecture, Clarke said he was impressed by community sentences, and in favour of local prisons for those sentenced to less than four years. He said young offenders need attention, and that a review of Home Office strategy for developing prisons has been commissioned.
