The announcement, made last week by Home Office spokesman Lord Bassam in a Parliamentary debate, will be a blow to charities Nacro and Inquest, which are calling for an inquiry into Joseph Scholes' death (YPN, 12-16 November 2003, p4).
Lord Bassam said the forthcoming inquest into Scholes' death on 19 April last year meant no public inquiry was necessary.
The announcement coincided with news that prison deaths will now be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
Prisons minister Paul Goggins said this was part of an overhaul of the Government's suicide prevention strategy, which will be developed with the Department of Health.
