Young Offenders: Met to offer drugs advice after arrest

Newham has become the first of three Metropolitan Police districts to offer every young person arrested the chance to speak to a trained drugs worker.

While the young people are in custody, staff from the Westminster Drug Project will approach them to discuss what led to their arrest and how they can help.

If the young people are not involved in drugs, workers will talk to them about the risks of drug-taking. The Met also plans to launch the Treatment Referral Information Providers scheme in Southwark and Camden.

The scheme is funded by the Home Office's Criminal Justice Interventions Programme and will run for three years. The Met has offered similar advice to adult offenders for the past five years.

Workers will split their time in Newham between Forest Gate and Plaistow police stations and Stratford Youth Court.
