Scotland: Drug programme to help offenders

1 min read

The four-year Divert Initiative pilot launches at Airdrie Sheriff Court this autumn. The Procurator Fiscal will recommend people to the initiative in a bid to stop them using drugs.

The scheme is funded with 334,473 from the New Opportunities Fund and is run by North Lanarkshire Council in conjunction with the Procurator Fiscal and crime-reduction organisation Apex Scotland.

A two-year arrest-referral scheme will also be launched in the autumn with 128,000 from the Scottish Executive.

The pilot scheme will operate in Hamilton, Cumbernauld, and Bellshill's women's prison. Arrest-referral workers will visit young people at the point of arrest to provide drug and alcohol information and treatment programmes on a voluntary basis.
