Scotland: Scottish youth court declared a success

1 min read

The court launched a year ago in Hamilton. Sheriff Hugh Neilson, who chairs the pilot, said it has made "remarkable" progress since then.

"The youth court is working remarkably well in proceeding cases into and through court quickly," said Neilson.

By May, 277 young people had gone before the court and 141 appeared the day after arrest. A further 57 appeared within 10 days and only 16 cases resulted in a trial.

Neilson said: "Sticking to this timescale is a remarkable feat but this remains a court of justice, not a railroading system."

The youth courts aim to speed up cases involving 16- and 17-year-olds by increasing co-operation between lawyers, the court and other agencies.
