Scotland: Youth court to go for another year

Scotland's first youth court is to operate for another year after an evaluation found it had broad support from professionals.

The Hamilton Sheriff Youth Court pilot, started in June 2003, has been effective in fast-tracking young people into court, and was viewed by sheriffs and other professionals as "making the connection between the offence and sentence more meaningful".

The Scottish Executive committed to continuing the Hamilton pilot for another year, and said it would "not hesitate" to consider rolling out the model across Scotland if evidence from Hamilton and another pilot in neighbouring Airdrie, established in June 2004, "continues to build a clear and strong base".
