Young Offenders: Treatment deficit hits drugs test plan

1 min read
Patchy provision of drug prevention and treatment programmes across the country could undermine government plans to test young offenders for drugs, experts have warned.

National charity DrugScope said there was now only one residential project for under-16s with acute drug problems in the UK, and it only took children with mental health problems.

It said two projects in Kensington and Lincolnshire had recently closed due to a lack of referrals and funding, and that children with serious drug and drink problems were being treated at day facilities.

"Drug testing for young offenders can only be effective and worthwhile if high quality referral and support services are in place," said Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope.

The charity said more investment was needed in drug and prevention programmes as provision across the country was still patchy.
