YOUNG OFFENDERS: Dyslexia is common among offenders

Researchers also found a similarly high level of dyslexia, 80 per cent, among young people in a young offenders' institution. Those on referral orders and final warnings were also found to have high dyslexia levels: 30 per cent and 40 per cent respectively.

The British Dyslexia Association is calling on youth offending teams to put staff on dyslexia awareness courses and for young offenders to undergo a literacy assessment.

The full findings are expected by March next year. www.bda-dyslexia.org.uk.
