Dyslexia

The British Dyslexia Association describes dyslexia as a combination of difficulties in reading, spelling and writing that affect the learning process. Joe Lepper explores what support is available for school children.

ENGLAND

The Government's 2004 strategy for special educational needs, called Removing Barriers to Achievement, contains guidance relating to dyslexia and how schools in England should be supporting the estimated two to three children in every classroom with the condition. This includes a pledge to support teachers and special needs co-ordinators with the relevant training in helping those with dyslexia. In October, further training details were announced by schools minister Lord Adonis through the launch of the £2m Inclusion Development Programme. It provides teachers and early years workers with training to better support pupils with special educational needs.

SCOTLAND

In Scotland, the 2004 Education (Additional Support for Learning) Act is the key piece of legislation related to how children and young people with dyslexia are supported. This requires education authorities to identify and meet the additional support needs of all children, including those with dyslexia. Since the Act, the Scottish Government has sought to bolster support for teachers and councils. Dyslexia has been added to the General Teaching Council for Scotland's framework for professional recognition, giving teachers an accreditation for skills in supporting dyslexic children and young people.
