How much is on offer? The Young Leaders project is backed with £1,485,621 from the Big Lottery Fund and grants of up to £1,000 are available.
What will it fund? The programme seeks to support innovative and creative ideas on how to make young people aware of sexual health issues submitted by groups of young people. These education projects can involve some or all of the following issues: sexually transmitted infections, young people's rights in relationships, sexual bullying, contraception, sexuality, HIV, managing emotional relationships, safer sex and risk taking, and the media's influence on sex and relationships.
Who has it funded? The three-year funding programme was launched in 2007 and has handed out £60,000 worth of grants so far. Projects funded include Beer Goggles, an initiative run by sixth formers that used drama and dance to teach other pupils about alcohol and sexual choices, and Trans Youth Sexual Health, a project bringing together transgender teenagers from across England to discuss sexual health. Also funded was Break 4 U 2, a project formed by a group of young mums to run sexual health workshops for 13- to 23-year-olds in London.
