Young Carers: Filkin meeting to make support case

A group of young carers was due to meet children and families minister Lord Filkin yesterday (18 January) to make a case for better support.

The meeting came as three charities joined forces to highlight the problems facing young carers. The Children's Society, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and The Disabled Parents Network signed a partnership agreement calling for whole family assessments to take account of the needs of disabled adults and young carers.

Jenny Frank, programme manager at The Children's Society, organiser of the annual Young Carers Festival with the YMCA, said agencies must work together to protect children from taking on "inappropriate levels of caring".

This year's Young Carers Festival takes place from 1-3 July at Fairthorne Manor in Hampshire.
