Young carers: Chancellor unveils preventative plans

The Government's New Deal for Carers has been welcomed by a carers' charity, which believes that it may reduce the number of young people looking after disabled or sick relatives.

Alex Fox, head of young carers' development at Princess Royal Trust forCarers, said: "We are pleased the Government recognises how crucialcarers are. With more money for adult care services, they might begin towork preventatively so that families do not need to rely on youngcarers, who are often neglected."

The new deal was announced by Chancellor Gordon Brown last week. Thepackage includes 25m for short-term respite care for carers inemergency situations, 5m to support the development of an expertcarers programme, and 3m towards the establishment of a nationalhelpline for carers in England.

However, some were disappointed by the announcement. Steve Broach, campaign manager for Every Disabled Child Matters, said: "While themeasures announced are welcome, the real issue that needs to beaddressed is getting more breaks for families with disabled children, asthis is an essential service."
